Below are a list of our typical events that occur throughout the year in our pack.
Bike Rodeo
A fun event open to all children.
At the event kids will have their bikes and helmets checked. They will learn
about bike safety. Then they will complete 4-5 events that are fun and help
learn bike handling and bike safety.
Fall Camp
Held in late October or early
November, the Scouts and their parent go to a Scout style camp and stay in cabins
for two nights. The boys sing songs, perform skits, hike as well as other fun
stations of learning. We typically stay in the cabins at Elks Camp Barrett—
just 15 minutes down the road on Defense Highway.
Crofton Woods Elementary School (CWES) Clean Up
We pick a Saturday morning towards late November/early December
to clean up the billion or so leaves on the grounds of CWES. We are typically
done by noon and this is great way to give back to the school that a majority
of our cubs attend.
Pinewood Derby
One of the most
popular and most iconic activities for the Cub Scouts to participate in is the
Pinewood Derby. The pack gives out kits to each scout member to build their own
small wooden model of a derby car. Each January, the scouts then race the cars
in competition. The cars are sent down several tracks with the help of gravity
and the time is recorded. There are awards given to scouts for placing in the
race as well as for presentation of car styles.
Winter Camp
Held each
February, the Scouts and their parent go to a Scout style camp and stay in
cabins for two nights. The cub scouts sing songs, perform skits, hike as well
as other fun stations of learning. While it can sometimes get cold outside, the
scouts always have a big campfire around which they have fun. This is one of
the events where the Scouts participate in retiring American Flags.
Scouting for Food
For more than
20 years, Scouts have collected food to help feed almost 100,000 families who
depend on the generosity of their neighbors to help them feed their children
during tough times. We help each March through our Scouting for Food program.
Your scout leader will distribute bags provided and you will ask your friends
and neighbors to fill the bags with nonperishable food, place the filled bags
out for Scouts to pick up. We will then collect the bags and deliver the food
to a local food bank.
Blue and Gold Banquet
During Scouting
Anniversary Week in February we celebrate with a "birthday party"
called the Blue and Gold Banquet. The blue and gold banquet is one of the
highlights of the year, bringing families together for an evening of fun. The
purpose of the blue and gold banquet is to celebrate the anniversary of
Scouting in America, thank pack leaders and other adults who have helped the
pack, and inspire the leaders, Scouts, and parents. The banquet is similar to a
regular pack meeting, but there will be entertainment and great meal to
celebrate.
Arrow of Light Bridging Ceremony
Annual ceremony
in March for Arrow of Light Scouts to celebrate their accomplishments and
bridging to Scouts, BSA. For the scouts that achieved Arrow of Light (the
highest award in Cub Scouts), this is where the Arrow of Light Scouts
receive their badge before bridging to Scouts, BSA. Each Scout Troop
will send representatives from their troops to receive the cub scouts that
have chosen to join their troop.
Tent Camping
An annual
event, typically held in late April or early May, where the scouts get to
expand their outdoor experience to tent camping.
Pack-Wide Bridging Ceremony
This is our
annual ceremony where we recognize our Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and
Webelos for their work in achieving their next rank.
Fishing Derby
This activity
is held at the beginning of the summer in June. The scouts get an opportunity
to fish. We always encourage siblings and parents to participate, many of whom
have never been fishing before. The Fishing Derby is one of the few
opportunities where we are in the public eye as scouts in uniform. The
awareness helps facilitate our organization in the community.
Camp Tomahawk
Held for a full
week each June, the scouts of all ages will participate in this Scout, BSA
style day camp. The dens rotate through each station held at camp to include
knot tying, archery (all boys learn how to safely and properly shoot a long
bow), BB guns (all boys learn gun safety, proper handling, and shooting of
approved BB guns) and learning about other scout pastimes. Scouts participate
in songs, skits and joke telling. They also get to earn “coups” for completing
scout like behaviors and completing scout tasks.
Raingutter Regatta
Do you have what it takes to build a boat, and then blow it
ten feet down a raingutter in a winning style? Ahoy, mates! This could be the
sailing regatta of the century! Although the seas are only 10-foot lengths of
raingutter filled with water, and the ships a mere 6 inches long, the race is a
very exciting event held each August. Each scout will build their own boat with
supervision and help from parents or other family members. They provide the
wind for the sail with their own lung power!
Webelos Woods
Webelos Woods is designed to give
Webelo and Arrow of Light Scouts and their parents a preview of the Scouts, BSA
experience. The program, held each October, emphasizes Scouting values,
procedures, methods and skills. It is an introduction to Scouts, BSA being a
"scout led" program as opposed to the "adult led" program
used in Cub Scouts. Also, there is the thrill of camping in the outdoors in a
tent at a Scout style camp, which will encourage a desire to continue Scouting.
While there, the Cub Scouts will get to do archery, knot tying, pioneering and
other fun stations of learning. B-B shooting, Archery, Saturday Night
Campfire, Model Rockets, Canoeing, Pack Competitions and much more.
Popcorn Sales
Each fall, Scouts who participate
in the annual Scout Popcorn Sale not only prove that they have what it takes to
earn their own way and pay for their own Scouting program, but can earn badges,
too. By selling popcorn, Scouts can complete a number of requirements for rank
badges, Webelos Activity pins, Scout merit badges and more.
Camp Oest
While at Camp Oest, Cub Scouts and parents get excited about all
the amazing activities taking place. We entertain with skits, plays and, of
course, songs. In addition, the scouts participate in a variety of programs
including Archery, B.B. Guns, Crafts, Nature, Pool and waterfront sports. Camp
Oest allows entire packs or dens or just parents and scouts to come together
and just have FUN!
